The Red Tulip and Parkinson’s
Resilient. Adaptable. Powerful.
Symbolizing Both Strength and Grace:
As one of spring’s first blooms, the tulip pushes through the cold, representing renewal and hope. Its bold colors and simple beauty transcend cultures, carrying deep meaning of love, forgiveness, joy and respect. Resilient and endlessly varied, the tulip reminds us that even something delicate can hold incredible power.
The Red Tulip represents love, hope and support. Its resilience reflects the strength of those living with Parkinson’s, while its spring bloom symbolizes renewal and the ongoing pursuit of better treatments and a cure.
How it all Started
In 1980, Dutch horticulturist J.W.S. Van der Wereld, who lived with Parkinson’s, created a new red-and-white tulip, naming it the “Dr. James Parkinson” tulip to honor the physician who first described the disease in 1817.
Over time, this tulip became a unifying symbol of Parkinson’s awareness.
It wasn’t until 2005 that it was officially adopted at the World Parkinson’s Disease Day conference in Luxembourg.
The Red Tulip represents love, hope and support. Its resilience reflects the strength of those living with Parkinson’s, while its spring bloom symbolizes renewal and the ongoing pursuit of better treatments and a cure.
